Elizabeth Dias and Russell Bywater have established a screenwriting partnership over the last five years. Most recently, they were runners-up in the inaugural AWG/Open Channel New Writers’ Script Competition with their kids’ web series Mish Mash and are now both part of the AWG’s Pathways program.
Elizabeth won the Monte Miller Award – Short Form at the 2015 AWGIES for her script The Brooch and was selected as one of four writers for Open Channel’s Short Back and Sides short film initiative in 2016, supported by the Anzac Centenary fund. She was commissioned to write a short script for Astral Pictures last year, Blue Sky Blood Moon, currently in post. Elizabeth holds a Masters in Screenwriting (First Class) from the Victorian College of the Arts and has postgraduate qualifications in Graphic Design and Creative Arts Therapy. She works in the publishing industry and as a copywriter.
Russell is a script assessor with the Australian Writers’ Guild and his short films have screened at various local festivals including MIFF, Flickerfest and St Kilda Film Festival, as well as the Outer Limits Film Festival, New York. He was awarded a Master of Creative Media from RMIT University with Distinction, holds a degree in Cinema Studies and has completed industry training through AFTRS. Of particular relevance to this project, Russell has previously written and directed comic theatre for young audiences; while Elizabeth has designed and art directed children’s books for a number of publishers. Mish Mash was optioned by Happening Films last year.
