An award-winning professional actor and fine art graduate (majoring in painting) from the Victorian College of the Arts, Alan’s filmmaking practice represents an amalgamation of these two disciplines.
In 2012 Alan started his own production company, White Cube Picture Lab, with an objective to creating cutting edge avant-garde story telling for the screen. With six short films completed to date (The Winking Boy, Goldfield, The Correspondent, A Way Back, Catnap and Wild Will) Alan has begun to establish himself as a new distinct voice in the next generation of filmmakers. His works as a director/screenwriter have been awarded and screened worldwide. His films have gained distribution through IndieFlix, Hewes Pictures and Flickerfest distribution and screened on various commercial platforms and television networks including SBS and Canal.
His most recent film as director/writer, Wild Will, recently won the Jury Award for Innovation In Form at the 2019 Brisbane International Film Festival and screened in international festival competition at Clermont Ferrand, Tampere, Encounters, Dresden, St Kilda, Bucharest, Festival Tous Courts and Tallinn Black Nights as a part of their new Rebels With A Cause competition. Reviews for the film were glowing – Wild Will was named as one of the breakthrough discoveries of the 2019 Clermont Ferrand International Film Festival and one of the top ten international short films of 2019, by respected French industry cinema publication Ecran Noir. In his review of Wild Will Rolling Stone journalist Fillippo Venturi referred to the film as “un piccolo capolavoro” – “A small masterpiece”.
Alan’s screenplay Leo’s Dream was nominated for the 2017 AWG Monte Miller Award (short form) and was a semi-finalist in the 2018 Blue Cat screenplay competition. Alan has various feature film scripts completed to date, including The Milk Bar, a coming of age comedy which centres around the Cosmidies, a working class Greek family who operate a milk bar in the Western Suburbs of Victoria from the 70s to 90s. An early draft of The Milk Bar was a quarter finalist at the 2018 Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting.
