Bec Peniston-Bird

Bec began her career making documentaries which explored the creative process. These included Nick Cave: Abusing the Muse (MIFF) and Keith Haring Uncovered (ABC TV).

She subsequently directed a number of award winning short films, including Goodnight Sweetheart (Palm Springs International Film Festival), Fresh! (Series Mania) and Summer Suit (Berlin International Film Festival), which she also edited and produced. She also wrote and produced the Tropfest finalist short, Goggles.

Bec won the AWG’s Insite Award for her feature screenplay, Petrova, a Cold War drama set in 1950s Canberra. Petrova has since received development funding from Screen Australia and a TV adaptation is now in development.

She undertook a writer/director’s placement with the Spierig Brothers on the 2018 feature, Winchester,  starring Helen Mirren, Sarah Snook and Jason Clark.

After working in the writers’ room for Jack Irish, she directed second unit on the final season of the ABC TV series in 2021.

A commercials director by day, she has also worked as a piano accompanist and copywriter, and is an alumni of the Berlinale Talent Campus.

In 2023, Bec will direct the Truce Films rom com, Creative Differences, an adaption of the Audible Original novel by bestselling author Graeme Simsion.
