Chris Corbett has written over fifty hours of Australian television across a number of different genres. He has written police drama (Blue Heelers), undercover police drama (Stingers), legal drama (Newton’s Law), medical drama (All Saints), murder mystery (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and the Doctor Blake Mysteries). He has written shows with settings and topics ranging from women running an outback cattle stations (McLeod’s Daughters) to twenty-somethings living in inner city Melbourne (The Secret Life of Us). He is currently working as Script Producer of the fourth series of the International Emmy Award winning series Nowhere Boys.
Before working in television Chris worked in theatre as an actor, director, playwright and dramaturg. He was a co-founder of the Five Dollar Theatre Company and directed productions at theatres ranging from in size from La Mama to the Melbourne Theatre Company. He also spent years working in large scale street spectacles with the groups Primary Source and Strange Fruit – which saw him perform on the festival circuit across Australia and Europe.
He has taught screenwriting at RMIT’s Professional Screenwriting Course, the Victorian College of the Arts, The Australian Film Television and Radio School, Open Channel, Melbourne University Summer Film School and at the Council of Adult Education.
He wrote and produced the short film Fences – which won third prize and Best Screenplay at Tropfest 2009. Fences also screened at Aspen’s Shortsfest in 2010 where it was awarded a BAFTA Certificate of Excellence. His short film The Applicant was a Tropfest finalist in 2011 and also screened at the Aspen Shortsfest in 2012. He currently serves on the National Executive Board of the Australian Writers’ Guild, as AWG representative on the Victorian Film and Television Industry Working Party and on Film Victoria’s Evaluation Committee.
Chris is currently developing a slate of feature films, TV pilots and, after a long absence from theatre, is writing a play.
