Graeme Burfoot

Born in London, Graeme immigrated to Australia when he was nine. He finished schooling in Western Australia, attending Curtin University to study film, television and media design, graduating in 1982 with a BA in design with distinction. Graeme has been directing TV commercials, film and television for over 20 years.

He started his career as a designer and animator, becoming the director of animation on many award-winning commercials at the acclaimed animation/special effects production house Filmgraphics in Sydney until the mid-1990’s. Since then his outstanding visual effects direction for Tooheys War of the Appliance’s and Flies for Caltex, have won visual effects, animation and direction awards around the world. His commercials have won at Clio, Mobius, New York, Award, Asia Adfest, Gongs and London International. As an accomplished drama director, Graeme won the Australian Film Institute Award (The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award) for best short fiction film for The Beneficiary that he wrote and directed in 1997. The film was nominated for best short film at the Torino International Festival of Young Cinema and invited into numerous festivals around the world, won at the Palm Springs Film Festival and was short-listed in the final 10 shorts for the 1999 Academy Awards. In 2000, he directed second unit on the Warner Brothers, Village Roadshow sci-fi epic Red Planet.

In 2001 Graeme was voted as the top director of the Campaign Brief Directors Table for commercials directed in Australia. In 2002, he directed the three-part drama of Robert Drewe’s award winning book, Shark Net, for the ABC and BBC, which earned an AACTA nomination for best drama and was screened and well received at the New York Film Festival. The series received three 2004 Logie Award nominations for Most Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and won the Australian Screen Music Award for Best Music for a Mini Series or Telemovie for its score.

In 2006, Graeme earned a best director nomination at the Directors Guild Awards for the episode Call Back of the Bryan Brown series Two Twisted for the Nine Network. He won Best Director at the Australian Television Advertising Awards for his humorous ‘Olympics’ campaign for Westpac and his ‘Finding Changes’ spot for the National Breast Cancer Council won a silver award for Best Direction at Clio, London International Advertising Awards and New York Festivals. As a writer/ director, Graeme continues to write and explore new worlds for himself. In 2016 Graeme won The Australian Writer’s Guild John Hinde Award for excellence in science fiction screenwriting – best un-produced screenplay for his screenplay Red to Blue.
