Kirsty Budding

Kirsty Budding writes genre-blending dark comedy screenplays – from sci-fi to romantic comedy and crime.

Her screenplays have placed in several international competitions. Highlights include ‘Happy Ending Retirement Home’, which won the Grand Prize (Short) at Dallas International Film Festival (DIFF) Screenwriting Competition (2021), judged by readers from Gersh, CAA, and an industry jury; and her sci-fi dark comedy, ‘Harold, Electra and our Lord, David Attenborough’, a Finalist in the 2022 Atlanta Film Festival Screenwriting Competition and #3 on the Coverfly Sci-Fi Red List.

Kirsty was the recipient of the Canberra Arts Patrons Organisation Travel and Tours Performers Award (2021) to fund travel to the US, where she saw professional readings of her screenplays in Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and New York.

She was named a 2022 Screenwriter to Watch by Event Horizon Films.

Kirsty is currently developing ‘Chelsea on Fire’, a dark romantic comedy feature set during the Australian Bushfires, and a TV series, ‘Criminally Old’, about a retirement home for ex-cons.
