Luke McCarthy

Luke is a filmmaker, writer and critic based in Naarm.

He is drawn to stories which find unique and bizarre ways to explore the intersection of politics, queerness and identity within modern day Australia.

Since moving from Bendigo to Melbourne in 2016 to pursue a career in film, Luke has worked on a variety of successful short films and web-series. His latest short, titled Someone Else, has had a successful run in America’s queer film festival circuit, and his work on web-series Flunk (made with the support of Screen Australia) will be premiering online in late June.

Luke is also an experienced freelance critic, his writing having appeared in publications such as The Saturday Paper, The Monthly and The Guardian.

He is a recent graduate of First Break Victoria.

Currently, Luke is splitting his time between work at his local independent bookstore, pre-production for his latest short film and unnecessary doom-scrolling.
