Nathan Mewett a Western Australian Screenwriter and Director. He is a graduate of the Masters of Screen (Screenwriting) program at AFTRS in 2018 where his exegesis investigated his co-authorship practice of developing characters of Indigenous and disabled backgrounds, building on such creative partnerships as his collaborations with Martu (Western Desert) artist Curtis Taylor.
Nathan’s short film’s have qualified for Short Film (Live Action) presentation at the Academy Awards, played numerous top festivals throughout Australia (such as Sydney Film Festival, Cinefest Oz, Melbourne International Film Festival, Brisbane International Film Festival, Flickerfest, St Kilda) and screened Internationally at festivals such as Hollyshorts (LA), Deep Focus Film Festival (New York), Festival Des Antipodes (St Tropez, France), Festival Du Cinema Aborigene Australien (France). His films have garnered numerous awards and nominations including Best Screenplay Award at Heart Of Gold Film Festival and a special mention for Screenplay at Sydney Film Festival. His films have won Best Film at Flickerfest International Short Film Festival, ATOM Awards, Gold Coast Film Festival, Heart Of Gold Film Festival, Human Rights, Arts & Film Festival (Vic) and Qantas Vision Splendid Film Festival (Qld) and been nominated for Short Film in the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards.
In 2018 he was a Lexus Film Fellowship winner and in 2017 he attended the Melbourne International Film Festivals Accelerator lab. Upon graduating from AFTRS, he received the EU Short Film Award which saw him traveling to Austria to attend the International Film Festival Innsbruck as a guest of Embassy of the European Union.
Nathan has a keen interest in magic-realism which is evident in his Screenwriting work, yet his tastes and knowledge are eclectic and he is a scholar of many types of cinema and television. Whilst studying at AFTRS he trained in working collaboratively in a writers room environment and would be well suited to many types of projects and teams.
