Nicholas de Waal

Nicholas participated in the 2024 AWG First Break workshops at ACE Parramatta with Catherine Kelleher and Terence McCarthy.

A prolific young writer originally from South Africa, Nicholas immigrated to Coffs Harbour in 2017 and fell in love with Australian storytelling. His screenplays have placed in several international contests. In 2021, he reached the semi-finals of the coveted Outstanding Screenplay Shorts competition with ‘The Bench’. His short script ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ made the quarter-finals of the 2023 Golden Script International Screenplay competition, and was ranked fifth on the Coverfly Red List for the months of July and August that year.

Nicholas is based in Sydney and wants to create and write high-quality Australian television. He is also particularly excited about the prospect of notetaking, applying his passion, organisation, and research skills. He hopes to work with the nation’s best writers to produce stories that sit comfortably alongside the biggest shows on the world stage. He couldn’t think of anything better than working around the clock in writers’ rooms and script departments, conquering the blank page together.
