Rachel Perks

Rachel is a freelance playwright and screenwriter based in Narrm specialising in speculative fiction and dark comedy.

Last year they were awarded development funding for Unicorn Hunters from Screen Australia and SBS as part of the Digital Originals initiative. They are co-writer on Next Big Thing with show creator Michele Lee.

​Rachel was the inaugural winner of the 2021 Malthouse Theatre’s Playwriting Innovation award. Their dystopian science fiction work HYDRA was shortlisted for the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award in 2020 and premiered in July 2021 at Northcote Town Hall. It was recently nominated for three Green Room Awards including Best New Writing.

​They have a long-standing theatre partnership with director Bridget Balodis under the moniker ‘Double Water Sign’. Together, they have made MORAL PANIC (Darebin Arts, 2018), GROUND CONTROL (Next Wave Festival 2016), and ANGRY SEXX (Melbourne Fringe 2014).

Rachel recently completed the First Break Victoria program.
