Sophie Smyth (she/her) is a two-time award-winning multi-hyphenate creative based in Naarm/Melbourne.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Music Theatre) from Federation University’s Arts Academy and is known for her encyclopaedic knowledge on the subject. Outside of her performance work, Sophie is a writer of stage, screen, and bad haikus for every boy she’s ever kissed.
She is an inaugural recipient of Australians in Film’s UNTAPPED Development Lab, runner-up at the Australian Writer’s Guild’s Monte Miller Awards (for UNLOVEABLE), and a 2024 Arts Scholar for the American Australian Association. Other notable awards include the Lesley Hall Award from Arts Access Victoria for her commitment to challenging assumptions about disability through her work, and a Green Room Award for Best Writing in a Cabaret for her show The Aspie Hour.
Her screenwriting work has received development support from Screen Australia, and the Australian Broadcasting Company’s Fresh Start Fund.
Crowned “funny as fuck” by Time Out Melbourne, Sophie creates comedy-driven yet disarmingly vulnerable autobiographical work exploring her neurodivergent identity (autism, ADHD) that balances precariously on the twisted knife-edge of comedy/tragedy; she wields that knife to challenge assumptions and push the boundaries of humour. She is passionate about authentic representation, the Oxford comma, and making you laugh.
Currently, she is working on her newly optioned scripted television series UNLOVEABLE, and is in second-stage development of her new musical TITAN (working title) (music, lyrics, book) about identity, mortality, and the OceanGate submersible ‘Titan’.
